Vintage Indonesian Dayak Rattan Basket Bag

A beautifully made hand-woven rattan basket bag from Indonesia, built with a double-walled construction — a second full plaited layer inside the outer shell, which gives the bag its structure and rigidity without any lining or frame. The weave is a fine diagonal twill in alternating light and dark fibers, running herringbone on the body and shifting to a denser braided band at the rim.

The base is finished with a wooden slat frame, worn smooth from use, and the twin handles are rattan cores tightly wrapped in split cane, lashed through the body at four points.

The patina is the real draw here — decades of handling have brought the fibers to a deep honeyed amber with darker tones where the bag was carried and lighter, polished passages across the face.
